No More Frames, Please!

We see it everyday; websites developed in technologies that impede potential customers from finding your site in the search engines. One of the most common pitfalls, is using frames.

Why?

Since frames consist of web pages embedded within other web pages, they end up generating multiple web addresses for each page on the site. As users navigate through various pages on your site, the URL address in their browser remains the same. So, if they want to link to a particular page on your site, they can’t.

Although a few search engines can not index frames, most certainly can. The major search engines are all about grabbing URLs from web pages and indexing them. These search engines will find all of the web addresses embedded in your frames (navigational framed pages and content framed pages) and list them separately in the search results. If the content pages appear in the search engines without the navigational framed pages, your users will not be able to navigate to the rest of your site.

Frames also make if difficult to bookmark and print your web pages as well as using your browser’s Back and Refresh buttons.

The Solution

If you’re in the midst of creating a website, don’t use frames! If you currently have a site that uses frames, your best bet is to start over –- update your site with search engine-friendly design and code. Thanks to DIV layers and the onset of AJAX, frames are becoming a technology of the past -- there is no longer any reason to use them.

Now, re-designing and coding your site will take some time. So, here’s a quick fix that may help while you are overhauling your site; the NOFRAMES tag. This solution requires that you place another version of your web page(s) inside your famed pages(s). This alternate page is what the search engine will see. This quick fix will help search engines that do not index frames, but will not correct your navigational, linking, and printing problems.

So, for goodness sakes, no more frames...please!
